Apostolos Kostios

Apostolos Kostios studied Advanced Theory and Piano at the Hellenic Conservatory, Singing at the National Conservatory, and Art History and Musicology at the University of Vienna. In 1980, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Philosophy (Musicology). In 1992, he was elected Associate Professor and in 1998, Professor of Historical Musicology at the University of Athens, Department of Music Studies (Musicology). He has authored works such as "The Fifty Years of the Union of Greek Composers, 1931-1981" (1981), "Dimitris Mitropoulos" (1985), "Dimitri Mitropoulos" (1993), "Texts of D. Mitropoulos" - Comments by A. Kostios (1997), "Catalog of Works by Dimitris Mitropoulos" (1997), "The Element of Theatricality in the Work of D. Mitropoulos" (1997), "Musicological Studies I" (1999), "Method of Musicological Research" (2001), among others. He has translated opera librettos and musical treatises. He has edited critical editions of Mitropoulos's compositions, the music volume of the Educational Greek Encyclopedia ("Ekdotiki Athinon"), and discographic releases in Greece and abroad. He is the founder and scientific director of the series "Greek Musicological Editions" (Papagrigoriou-Nakas Music House). The focus of A.K.'s research interest is Greek music. He has been a scientific director or collaborator on research programs such as "Publication of Texts and Biographical Documents of M. Kalomoiris," "The History of the Athens State Orchestra," "Corpus of Music Criticism Notes by M. Dounias," "Identification and Collection of Texts in Newspapers and Magazines Related to Greek Musical Life from the Mid-19th to the Mid-20th Century," "Digitization of the G.N.O. Archive," among others. Apostolos Kostios established the "Archive and Documentation Center of Greek Music" (A.K.T.E.M.), which includes, among others, the "D. Mitropoulos Collection," supporting exhibitions on "Dimitris Mitropoulos - Life and Work" in Greece and major music centers abroad (Athens, Milan, Vienna, New York, Nafplio, Volos, Moscow, Patras, etc.). A.K. is credited with reviving interest in Mitropoulos's compositional work. He is a member of the Honorary Committee of the International Competition for Orchestra Conducting and Composition "Dimitris Mitropoulos." Apostolos Kostios has collaborated with the First and Third Programs of ERT, as well as with Austrian Radio (ORF). Since 1998, he has been elected president of the Greek section of the International Music Council - UNESCO. Since 1997, he has been a member of the Plenary of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO. On his initiative, the "Greek Music Award - UNESCO" was established. Apostolos Kostios served as Vice President of the Board of the G.N.O. from 1999 to 2006. Since 1981, he has offered his services as a "Consultant Professor" (Scholarship Department) of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation. In 1988, the Austrian Ministry of Education awarded Apostolos Kostios the title of "Professor." In 2004, he was named an Honorary Member of the Union of Greek Composers in recognition of his contribution to Greek music.
