Giorgos Kotzioulas

Giorgos Kotzioulas (1909-1956). Giorgos Kotzioulas was born in Platanousa (Rapsista), Epirus. His father was a postal worker. He completed primary school in his hometown, attended secondary school in Kalenzi, Ioannina, and finished high school in Arta. In 1926, he enrolled in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Athens. Alongside his studies, he worked as a proofreader and translator for Athenian magazines and newspapers. Due to the harsh working conditions, he contracted tuberculosis in 1934, an illness that plagued him for the rest of his life. He was hospitalized for short periods in Parnitha, Penteli, and Athens, but mostly stayed with friends as he was often homeless. During the Metaxas dictatorship, he was persecuted for his leftist activities and returned to his hometown in 1940. During the German occupation, he participated in the national resistance and was active in ELAS, where he organized the artistic department and helped establish the theater troupe "Laiki Skini," touring Greek villages. He returned to Athens in 1945, got married, and had a son. He died in Athens from a heart attack. Kotzioulas made his literary debut in 1924 by publishing verses in the "Epirotiki Echo" of Ioannina, but his involvement in literature was significantly influenced by his appearance in the magazine "Bouquet." He subsequently collaborated with magazines such as "Oikogeneia," "Pnoi," "Ellinika Grammata," "Nea Estia," "Logos," "Rythmos," "Neoellinika Grammata," "Pnevmatiki Zoi," "Nea Filla," and "Poiitiki Techni." In 1932, he published his first poetry collection titled "Ephemera." He also engaged in prose, essays, criticism, and theater (during his struggle in the civil war, he wrote plays for the troupe of Laiki Skini, including "Wake Up Rayah," "The Party Leader," and "The Forest Fine"). Kotzioulas's poetry is chronologically placed in the innovative poetry of the interwar period, but it essentially continues the tradition of the immediately preceding poetic generation, following the paths of neo-symbolism and neo-romanticism as expressed through the traditional versification of poets like Miltiadis Malakasis, Kostas Karyotakis, and Tellos Agras. His writing evolved from a spirit of morbidity and irony to a more realistic and experiential tone, especially after his involvement with ELAS and his commitment to communist ideology.
