
Konstantinos Tsoukalas
Konstantinos Tsoukalas was born in Athens in 1937. He is an emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Athens, a Doctor of Letters and Human Sciences from the University of Paris, and an honorary doctorate recipient from the Universities of Crete and Peloponnese. After studying at the Law School of the University of Athens, he pursued postgraduate studies in Philosophy of Law and Sociology at the Universities of Heidelberg, Munich, Paris, and Yale. In 1974, he was awarded a Doctorate in Letters and Human Sciences from the University of Paris. From 1961 to 1998, he practiced law in Athens. He worked as a researcher at the Athens Center of Social Research (1963-1967) and the French National Center for Scientific Research (1968). Between 1968 and 1985, he was a professor of sociology at the University of Paris, and since 1985, he has been an emeritus professor of Sociology in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Athens. He has also served as a professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Paris 8 and the Law School of the University of Thessaloniki (1981-1985), scientific director of the National Center for Social Research (1981-1989), and a visiting professor at Columbia University in New York, Princeton University, New York University (NYU), the City University of New York (CUNY), Iztapalapa University in Mexico City, Paris 1 University, and the Department of Economics at the University of Athens. He has also been a member of the Supreme Council for Research and Technology, head of the Greek delegation at the UN World Summit for Social Development (1994-1996), a permanent member of the "Carrefour pour la science et la culture" organized by the EU under the presidency of Jacques Delors, president of the Board of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, president of the Association of Greek Sociologists of the Hellenic Political Science Association, and a Member of Parliament for SYRIZA in the January 2015 elections. He is the president of the Board of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.
