Alexandros Panagoulis

Alexandros Panagoulis
Alexandros Panagoulis (July 2, 1939 - May 1, 1976) was a politician and poet. He was actively involved in the struggle against the dictatorship of the Greek military junta (1967-1974). He became globally known for his courageous act of attempting to assassinate the dictator Georgios Papadopoulos on August 13, 1968, as well as for his endurance during the torture that followed (Oriana Fallaci dedicated her book "A Man" to him). After the restoration of democracy, he was elected as a Member of Parliament with the Center Union (E.K.). He died on May 1, 1976, in a car accident on Vouliagmenis Avenue at the age of 36, just days before the revelation of the files he possessed concerning the junta's security apparatus (ESA File). Many believe the car accident was orchestrated to eliminate the evidence he had. However, no proof has been presented to substantiate these speculations to date. (Source: Wikipedia)
