Roderick Beaton

Roderick Beaton was born and raised in Edinburgh. He studied English literature at the University of Cambridge, where he later received a doctorate in Modern Greek literature. From 1981 until his retirement, he taught modern Greek and Byzantine history, language, and literature at King's College, University of London, where, from 1988, he held the Korais Chair at the Centre for Hellenic Studies. He has written extensively on topics related to modern and medieval Greek literature. In Greece, his books include, among others, "Introduction to Modern Greek Literature" (Nefeli Publications, 1996), the biography "George Seferis: Waiting for the Angel" (Okeanida, 2003), the study "Kazantzakis: Modernist and Postmodernist" (Kastaniotis, 2009), as well as his novel "The Children of Ariadne" (Kastaniotis, 1999). He has also edited the collective volume "Introduction to the Work of Kazantzakis: Selected Critical Texts," published by Crete University Press (2011). He was awarded the Grand Prize for Letters at the 2025 State Literary Awards for his overall contribution to literature.
