Fragos S. Fragoulis

Fragkoulis S. Fragkos was born in 1951 in Komotini. In 1970, he was admitted first to the Hellenic Military Academy, from which he graduated, also first, in 1974 with the rank of Second Lieutenant. He served in the Special Forces and was an active Paratrooper until his retirement. He is a graduate of the Supreme War College and the NATO Defence College (NADEFCOL). For six years, he served as a Military Attaché and Defense Attaché at the Greek Embassy in Ankara. He was the Director of Intelligence of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff during the Olympic Games in Greece in 2004. He has held positions as Commander of a Marine Battalion and Brigade, Mechanized Division, Army Corps, Army, and was the General Army Inspector. He served as Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff from 2009 to 2011. In the caretaker government of Prime Minister Mr. Pikramenos, he assumed the duties of Minister of National Defense (May-June 2012). He is an Honorary Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff and an Honorary Citizen of the Municipality of Rethymno, the Municipality of Amyntaio, and the Municipality of Orestiada. He holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from Panteion University. He is a Doctor of Geopolitics and Geostrategy from the Ionian University. He speaks English, Turkish, and Russian. In 2010, his study on the Battle of Marathon was published under the title "Without Cavalry. Battle of Marathon (490 B.C.). 2,500 Years..." (Strategic Publications), which was immediately translated into English under the title "Without Cavalry. Battle of Marathon (490 B.C.). 2,500 Years...", and a German translation is in preparation.
