Men's fragrance: How to choose and how to wear the one that suits you!

For every man, fragrance is an invisible element of his personal style, but it is not always easy to find the ideal one among a multitude of choices.

This guide will help you choose a fragrance that will suit you perfectly and express your style and uniqueness!

Types of Perfumes

The amount of essential oils contained in each perfume determines its type. As the percentage of essential oil concentration increases, so does the duration and intensity of the fragrance, and therefore its quality and price. There are 5 main types based on the intensity it will have on you.

  • Eau de Cologne: The lightest fragrance, with a short duration of 2 hours. It has a refreshing scent, comes in large bottles due to dilution with water/alcohol, and is affordable. Historically, it is derived from citrus essential oils.
  • Eau de Toilette: Light and discreet, ideal for daily use, especially during the summer months. Lasts 2-4 hours and contains more essential oils than Eau de Cologne.
  • Eau de Parfum: Contains a higher concentration of essential oils, lasting 4-5 hours. It has a strong scent and applies well to hair and clothes. It is more expensive than the previous types.
  • Pure Parfum: The most intense and luxurious fragrance, with a pure composition. Worn in small quantities, lasts 4-6 hours, and is preferred for evening outings.
  • Eau Fraiche: A light fragrance with a short duration, containing a high concentration of water, alcohol, and essential oils. Less lasting than Eau de Toilette/Parfum.
  • Body Mists: Very light scents with a low concentration of essential oils. Used all over the body, offering a subtle and fresh aroma.

The Notes of the Fragrance

Although the exact composition of most fragrances remains a closely guarded secret, most fragrances can be identified based on their dominant note. Thus, an experienced "nose" can analyze the aromatic pyramid of a fragrance into 3 notes:

  1. Top Notes: the top notes are the elements of the fragrance that you smell after the first application, the first impression that lasts from 5 to 10 minutes and is very important in choosing the fragrance.
  2. Heart Notes: the heart notes are the "body" of the fragrance and are perceived about 20 minutes after application. They usually last from 3 to 5 hours and outline the character of the fragrance.
  3. Base Notes: the base notes are released after about 40 minutes and change the fragrance as it interacts with your skin, giving a strong deeper longevity that makes it "unique" to you and can last up to 10 hours.

Tip The more intense and heavy notes are suitable for the colder seasons and evening outings, while for the warmer days of the year or your daily strolls, prefer the lighter and fresher notes.

The scents and fragrance groups

Most fragrance experts classify scent profiles into 4 main groups, in order to describe the characteristics of fragrances and the spectrum through which our noses interpret scents:

Choose the fragrance that suits you

You should keep in mind that each fragrance smells completely different on each skin, when it combines with the natural scent.

You may smell the same fragrance on a friend of yours and not like it at all, while on your own skin it may enchant you. That's why, before buying, it is good to have a test on your own skin.

  • Prefer to try the fragrance on your skin and not on paper testers.
  • Avoid testing many different fragrances on the same day, as your sense of smell may get confused. Testing up to 3-4 fragrances at a time is acceptable.
  • If you are going to try more than 1 fragrance, try to cleanse your sense of smell between tests by smelling a tea bag or coffee beans.
  • The best testing point is the inside of your wrists. Spray 1 to 2 times and wait at least 15 minutes before smelling it again, so that the heart notes are released. As we said, the same fragrance can smell completely different on each person.
  • Never rub the fragrance on yourself, as it alters the final result.

When you settle on the fragrance you like, look for shower gel or After-Shave products from the same range, which may have similar notes and thus the scents will not be complicated. With combined use, the result on you will be cleaner and more intense.

How to Wear Fragrance Correctly

As a general rule, your fragrance should not be noticeable from more than half a meter away. So, calculate the sprays properly and don’t overdo it.

  • Always apply it to clean, dry skin, ideally after your shower, when the skin pores are open and you will achieve longer-lasting wear. If you have dry skin, spray a larger amount, while the opposite applies to oily skin.
  • Fragrance is best enhanced on the warmer areas of your body, namely the chest, neck, inner elbows and wrists, shoulders, and behind the ear. This does not mean you need to spray on all of these areas at once. In fact, if it is a new fragrance, it is best to limit yourself to 1-2 spots until you get used to it.
  • Never rub the fragrance into your skin. Spray it on the areas you want and let it unfold on its own.
  • Under no circumstances should you spray it directly onto clothes, because the oils may create stains or damage the fabric. Also, the scent will definitely be completely different compared to applying it directly to the skin.
  • It goes without saying that you should not wear different fragrances at the same time.
  • As mentioned, most fragrance lines are accompanied by matching after shave and shower gel, which, when used together, elevate the final result.
  • High temperature increases the intensity of the fragrance, while low temperature reduces it. So, in summer you choose lighter fragrances, and in winter you can try heavier notes.
  • Most fragrances need about 30 to 40 minutes to release their base notes after application. Therefore, it is a good idea to wear your fragrance at least 30 minutes before you reach your destination.

Match the fragrance to the occasion

Just like with your clothes, you should treat your fragrance as an additional "accessory" that complements your overall outfit and adjust it according to the occasion or season.

  • Summer wedding: opt for a light fragrance with a citrus base, but be careful with the amount you wear to be discreet. You don't want to smell from a distance and overshadow the groom and the bride.
  • Job interview: In most cases, it is good for your fragrance to be subtle when going for an interview. However, in the modern work environment, it is nice to show that you take care of yourself, so a discreet fragrance with a woody base will complement your appearance.
  • First date: Wear the fragrance that you love as it characterizes you and shows who you are. After all, you want your date to get to know the real you, and if you like strong masculine scents, it should be clear from the first moment.
  • Clubbing night out: if you frequent clubs, you may already have the suitable fragrance in your arsenal. Opt for spicier and heavier scents, especially since you will sweat in the warm club environment, intensifying the scent of the fragrance that will last throughout the night.

Preserve and protect the fragrance

Your fragrance contains alcohol and ingredients that are sensitive to light, temperature, and humidity, so if you want to preserve its intensity, you need to pay attention to a few small things when storing it:

  • Store the fragrance in a shady place, ideally in a cabinet, away from humidity, sunlight, and high temperature. As you can understand, the conditions in your bathroom are usually the opposite, so it's better to keep it somewhere inside your room.
  • An easy and practical solution for the summer months is to put it in the refrigerator. The low temperature will help it stay cool, so that its scent does not alter and remains intense until the end.
  • It goes without saying that after each use, make sure to put the cap on the bottle to prevent it from evaporating.
