Οδηγός αγοράς 3D Printer Filament

You bought the printer, but what "food" will you give it? The filament you choose determines whether your object will be decorative, durable, or flexible. Let's break it down simply:

The 3 Basic Materials

  • PLA (The ideal for beginners): It is the most popular. It prints easily, has no odor, and comes in thousands of colors.

Tip: If you have a fast printer, look for "High-Speed PLA" to avoid gaps between layers.

  • PETG (The durable one): It combines ease of use (like PLA) with strength. It withstands water and heat. Ideal for objects you use daily (e.g. a hanger).

  • TPU (The flexible one): Like rubber! You can make phone cases, stamps, or rubber parts for modeling.

Attention: It requires a very low printing speed, unless you have a Direct Drive printer.

Materials for Advanced Users

  • ASA / ABS: Very hard plastics, ideal for cars or outdoor use.

Attention: They have a strong smell and absolutely require a closed printer. ASA is preferable because it does not fade in the sun.

  • Wood / Carbon Fiber: Filaments that contain wood shavings or carbon fibers. They provide an excellent texture, but they "wear out" your printer's nozzle.

Appearance matters!

  • Silk: Gives a strong metallic shine. Perfect for vases and decorative items.
  • Matte: Has a "matte" finish. Hides print lines very well and the result looks like factory-made plastic.
  • Dual/Triple Color: The filament has two colors at the same time. The object changes color as you turn it in the light!

What to Watch Out for When Buying (SOS)

Diameter: Most printers use 1.75mm. Make sure you don’t accidentally buy 2.85mm unless you have a specific professional machine.

Moisture (The Enemy): Filament "absorbs" moisture from the air. If you hear a "crack" during printing or see bubbles, the filament needs drying. Store your filaments in airtight bags.

Roll Quality: Prefer branded filaments to ensure they are properly wound on the spool. If the filament is tangled, the print will stop halfway because the knot will get stuck!

Tip: Start with a good PLA in gray or silver color. These colors show details best and will help you learn your printer before moving on to more challenging materials!
