What is Minoxidil and What Are Its Benefits

If you have even done a little research on hair loss treatment, you have definitely come across minoxidil. It is the most famous drug in the world for stopping thinning and helping new hair grow.

But how does it work and what should you pay attention to before starting it?

1. How was it discovered?

It began in the 1970s as a pill for people who had very high blood pressure (hypertension). However, doctors noticed an unusual side effect: patients started growing hair all over their bodies.

So, scientists took the active ingredient, turned it into a lotion for the scalp, and that’s how the best-known treatment against baldness was born.

2. How does it work?

When the roots of the hair (the follicles) weaken, the hairs become thinner and thinner until they fall out and do not grow back.

Minoxidil does the following:

  • Opens the blood vessels in the scalp.

  • This brings more blood, oxygen, and “nourishment” directly to the roots.

  • Wakes up the roots that have become inactive, forcing them to keep the hair alive for longer and to grow it thicker and stronger.

3. What forms is it available in?

  • Lotion (Liquid): The classic form. You apply it with a dropper or spray twice a day. Sometimes it causes a little itching or dry skin.

  • Foam: A more modern form. It dries very quickly, does not make the hair greasy, and irritates the skin less than lotion.

  • Pill (in a very small dose): A new trend that dermatologists prescribe for those who are too lazy to apply lotion.

4. What to expect when you start using it

Minoxidil takes time and consistency.

  • First weeks: During the first month and a half, you may notice more hair falling out. Don’t panic and don’t stop using it! It’s a sign that the medicine is working. It pushes out the old, “tired” hairs so new, stronger ones can start growing.

  • When you’ll see results: It will take at least 3 to 6 months of daily use to see a difference.

  • The commitment rule: If you stop using minoxidil, any hair you gained thanks to it will fall out within a few months. The treatment requires consistency.

5. Side Effects

Although it is generally very safe, you may experience:

  • Itching, redness, or dandruff on the scalp (if this happens, your doctor will suggest switching back to foam).

  • Hair in unwanted areas: If you apply the lotion and then touch your face or pillow without washing your hands, you may develop fine hair on your face.

  • Dizziness or rapid heartbeat: Very rare, but if you feel this, stop using it and call your doctor.

Visit a dermatologist before starting Minoxidil

You should under no circumstances go to the pharmacy and buy minoxidil just because you saw a few hairs falling out. A visit to a dermatologist is mandatory before you put anything on your head.

Why is the dermatologist so necessary?

  1. The cause must be identified: Hair loss is not always the same. You may be losing hair due to stress, iron deficiency, thyroid issues, or hormones. If the cause is something else, minoxidil simply will not work and you will waste time and money.

  2. Health issues: Since the medicine affects blood vessels, if you have any heart condition or low blood pressure, the doctor must decide whether it is safe for you.

  3. Pregnancy: If you are a woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding, minoxidil is strictly prohibited.

Products with Minoxidil are available only from pharmacies.
