Buying Guide for Cannabis Products (CBD): Everything You Need to Know

Thinking about trying cannabidiol (the well-known CBD) but feeling a bit lost with the percentages, types, and terms? Don’t worry! It’s much simpler than it seems.

CBD is a completely legal and natural substance derived from the cannabis plant. Unlike THC (the substance responsible for the “high”), CBD has no psychoactive effect whatsoever, which means it does not “get you high” and does not cause addiction. On the contrary, it is known for its ability to promote relaxation, support sleep, and soothe the body from tension.

See below the 4 simple steps to choose the right product for you.

Step 1: Choose the Type of Extract

Not all CBD products are the same. In store filters, you’ll see 3 main types. Here’s what each one means in simple terms:

  • Full Spectrum - The most complete: It contains the best parts of the hemp plant (all cannabinoids and essential oils), along with the legal, minimal trace of THC (up to 0.3%). All these ingredients work together to give you the maximum possible effect (this is called the “entourage effect”).

    • Warning: If you are frequently subject to strict drug tests at work or in sports, it’s best to avoid it, because regular daily use may show traces.

  • Broad Spectrum - The safe middle ground: It has all the beneficial compounds of the plant (terpenes and other cannabinoids), but during processing the THC has been removed to undetectable levels (zero). Ideal for those who want a strong effect without any worry about THC.

  • Isolate - The purest CBD: It is pure CBD at 99%, usually in the form of crystals dissolved in an oil (such as olive oil or coconut oil). It has almost no hemp taste or smell and is 100% guaranteed THC-free.

Step 2: How to take it (Product forms)

Depending on what suits you and why you want it, you can choose:

  • Oils & Drops (CBD Oil): This is the most popular method because it works quickly. The secret here is how you take it: The drops should be placed under the tongue (sublingually). You should hold them there for about 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing. This way, the CBD is absorbed directly into your bloodstream within a few minutes, without passing through the stomach where part of its potency would be lost.

  • Edibles (Gummies, Capsules): They are super easy to take, you can carry them with you everywhere (like candies), and they taste great. However, because they first pass through the stomach and digestive system, they take longer to work (usually 1-2 hours).

  • Topical Application (Creams, Roll-on, Ointments): Ideal if you have localized pain (e.g. in the joints, lower back, or muscles after training) or skin issues (e.g. severe dryness, eczema). You apply them exactly where it hurts and they work only locally, without entering the bloodstream.

Step 3: What do the percentages mean (5%, 10%, 20%)?

The percentages simply show how strong the oil is, meaning how many milligrams (mg) of CBD the bottle contains.

If you are a beginner, the golden rule of CBD is: "Start Low, Go Slow".

  • Do not go straight for the strongest oil on the market (e.g. 20% or 30%).

  • Start with a low-strength bottle, around 5% or 10%.

  • Start with 2-3 drops, 2-3 times a day. Observe how you feel for 3-4 days. If you do not see the desired relaxing or relieving effect, gradually increase the number of drops. Every body is different and needs time to find its own ideal dose!

A small reminder: CBD products are supplements and wellness aids. They are not medicines and are not intended to treat medical conditions. Use them as a natural ally for a calmer and more balanced everyday life!
