Are we counting down to the end of the year or not yet? Until then, since Christmas is coming, how about a little Christmas horror, just for good measure? Are you tired of watching the same old things every year? Do you think you've seen it all? What if, instead of sugary Christmas romantic movies and comedies, you changed the repertoire this year? 

I have the solution for you, dear reader, and to get us into the holiday spirit of Christmas a bit differently this year, I've prepared a list of the best horror movies for you to watch alone or with company!

Note, the list is not in order of preference, but chronologically based on their release dates. :)

1. Black Christmas (1974)

And we start our list with a slasher movie from the '70s. Don't let the date fool you, the movie gradually manages to "build" the suspense, it will make you sympathize with the characters, the killer appears as if you're playing an FPS game (seeing through his eyes), and of course, it's full of scares.

The story is quite simple: Christmas is coming and a group of girls, members of a sorority at a university, are making their plans for the holidays. Until the phone rings and it's not a very friendly call. Of course, they inform the police, but they don't pay much attention. 

- No, Clare, it's the Mormon Tabernacle Choir making their annual obscene phone call.

2. Dead End (2003)

We continue with a 2003 movie, a small gem that (unfortunately) never became very well-known. It will keep you in suspense, the characters are very likable, and it has humor. What more do you want! The plot, let me tell you:

It's Christmas Eve and a father is driving a car with his family inside, heading to his in-laws for the holidays. And while he has been taking the same route for 20 years, he decides for the first time to try a different road to get there faster. In short, he takes the wrong turn at night, and of course, makes the biggest mistake of his life!

- Was there no dial tone?

- No, Laura. I just forgot the number to 9-1-1!

3. Rare Exports (2010)

Finnish movie next, it will definitely make you, whether you want to or not, believe in Santa Claus! The movie is quite dark and mysterious, and the plot is as follows:

On the eve of Christmas in Finland, Americans are conducting an excavation in the depths of a mountain, with the help of dynamite. There lies the secret of Christmas, which should (in my opinion) remain a secret. And the little protagonist of the movie, of course, goes to spy.

- The real Santa was totally different. The Coca-Cola Santa is just a hoax.

4. A Christmas Horror Story (2015)

Christmas is family, tradition, forgiveness, it's the most beautiful time of the year! If you manage to survive. Ok, it's not an Oscar movie, it's a movie to have fun with, with nice special effects, great stories, and some twists!

The movie involves 4 different stories that intertwine, narrated by a radio producer: high school students investigate a mysterious murder, a couple notices that their young son has changed behavior, and a family being watched by Krampus, the Christmas demon. Oh, and at the North Pole, Santa Claus fights against his zombie-elves!

- I said I don't want a goddamn cookie! You reindeer f*cking snow wh*re!

5. Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)

And speaking of zombies, here comes a zombie musical. Yes, you read that right. The movie is a musical with zombies. Obviously, it is a horror comedy in the style of Shaun of the Dead, and it is definitely original!

Christmas and in a small town, the teenage protagonist wakes up to find chaos. Along with her classmates and friends, she tries to fight, sing, and dance for her survival. And obviously, it is not easy at all!

- Oh no. Justin Bieber is a zombie!

6. The Advent Calendar (2021)

We are approaching the end of our festive list with a Belgian movie this time, of the "be careful what you wish for" type.

The paraplegic protagonist receives as a gift from a friend a countdown calendar, like those where you open a little door each day and eat a chocolate until Christmas. Only, inside each door, there are different kinds of surprises. And she must follow the rules of the game if she wants to make it to the end!

+1 The Conjuring 2 (2016)

And we have reached the end, dear reader. We close our list with the top Conjuring 2, the second movie of the trilogy which, although it doesn't flaunt it, takes place during Christmas. If you haven't seen the first one, it would be good to watch it. Guaranteed, you will need new underwear.

The protagonists are the same well-known couple who investigate paranormal phenomena, and they are called once again to help a mother raising her 4 children alone, in a house where they are definitely not alone.

- There was a crooked man... and he walked a crooked mile; The crooked man stepped forth and... rang the crooked bell; And thus his crooked soul... spiralled into a crooked Hell; Murdered his crooked family... and laughed a crooked laugh.
