- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Capsules: The CO₂ cartridge is a small, single-use metal cylinder filled with compressed carbon dioxide (CO₂). It is placed in the gun as a power source for propelling the pellets (or for greater blowback realism).
- Gas Ram: The Gas Ram is an internal propulsion mechanism placed inside the cylinder and consists of a sealed piston. When you fire, the piston is compressed, the gas expands, and pushes the piston to propel the pellet.
- Spring: The spring mechanism is the traditional powerplant of a spring-powered air pistol, where a metal coil spring is compressed and, when released, expands and pushes a piston that compresses air towards the barrel and propels the pellet.
- Airsoft: The term PCP (Pre-Charged Pneumatic) refers to airguns that have an internal high-pressure air reservoir. This air propels the pellets/BBs when released in a controlled manner
- Electric: Instead of manual operation or propellant gas, the power comes from an electric battery that drives a small motor. The motor compresses a spring via gears, and the spring is released to propel the BB.
- Pump: The term pneumatic describes any mechanism that uses compressed gas or air to propel the projectile (pellet or BB).
- Metal Projectiles (Pellets): Pellets are specially shaped projectiles designed for rifled barrels. Their distinctive shape (“diabolo” with a narrow waist and widened rear) helps seal the barrel and provides flight stability (gyroscopic effect).
- BBs: BBs are spherical projectiles, usually small balls used in airsoft pistols/rifles (6 mm) and in certain types of BB guns (.177 / 4.5 mm).
- Blowback: This is a mechanism in air pistols where part of the propellant gas energy moves the slide or bolt backward. The result is realistic recoil and automatic reloading for the next shot.
