Semotics examines the structure and functioning of meaning systems, from literature and painting to cinema and television, to clothing, objects, and everyday behavior, in architecture and urban space. In other words, it is a theory of culture and is always a special chapter in contemporary anthologies of cultural studies.

At the same time, because individual and collective identities are formed within the context of social and cultural communication, semiotics is an integral part of anthropology and sociology. The authors of this book have chosen to present, among the various semiotic directions, the "classical" European semiotics, a flexible product of the always relevant and radical structural linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure.

After a brief overview of the historical evolution of the field and the various schools of semiotics, the theory of language as a system is extensively analyzed, which is a theory of the sign. This is followed by its extension into the theory of narratology, based on the works of the Paris School and its central figure, Algirdas-Julien Greimas, which is now a theory of the text.

The authors enrich the presentation with their personal research, based on which they organize the final part of the book, in which they develop an original theory of communication.
