"Tentoura Castro" is the quintessential liqueur of Patras. According to tradition, its origin dates back to around the 15th century, the era of the Venetians, while its name comes from the Latin word tinctura, meaning tincture or extract. The old residents of Patras also called Tentoura "moschovolithra" because it had a strong aroma. Its taste, aroma, and color are owed to the spice extracts it contains, mainly cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, but also bitter orange, citron, etc. Tentoura is enjoyed everywhere: after a good meal as a digestive liqueur, in cafes and bars as a regular drink, neat, with soda or tonic, but mainly chilled in small glasses, with cream and grated cinnamon.
