Description & Specifications

Do modern people really want freedom, or do they feel fear in the face of it? Erich Fromm's *The Fear of Freedom* remains a timeless and prophetic book regarding what is happening today, as well as what may follow, as freedom becomes increasingly restricted by the intensity of economic, social, political, and religious totalitarianism.

In this emblematic work, Fromm first explains how revolutionary changes in economic and social organization, the excessive power of capital, and the economic crisis exacerbate feelings of uncertainty, loneliness, and insignificance in contemporary individuals, while the threat of war strengthens fear.

He then focuses on the individual's defense mechanisms, which are simultaneously escape mechanisms from freedom: totalitarianism, the propensity for destruction, and conformity. And if for the unsuspecting citizen conformity is harmless, for Fromm it holds immense significance: within the framework of this "solution," which the majority of society resorts to, the individual ceases to be themselves and fully adopts the personality type imposed by cultural norms, public opinion, and common sense.

Thus, the conscious fears of loneliness and uncertainty are addressed through inclusion in the whole. However, in this way, the individual pays the price for their departure from true, positive freedom, which consists of spontaneous activity.
