Description

The World Academy of Cultures, chaired by Elie Wiesel (Nobel Peace Prize), organizes an annual international Forum where Academy members and experts from various fields engage with a topic of our society.

By raising the question "Which globalization?", the Academy chose to reflect on an issue that often becomes a basis for superficial assessments. During the proceedings, several important issues emerged: Globalization is not a new phenomenon in the history of humanity. Nor is it simply about aligning with Western values and methods, particularly the American ones.

Throughout history, strong interactions have been observed between peoples and cultures, and modern globalization is part of this tradition. Globalization is not a tragedy. Thanks to it, humanity has enriched itself from a scientific, technological, humanitarian, and cultural perspective.

One of the critical problems is how to achieve a fairer distribution of the fruits of globalization between rich and poor countries, as well as among various social groups within nations themselves. We must also not forget the problems created by the conflict of hegemonic aspirations of dominant countries with the universal right to development.

Organizing and controlling globalization is the necessary response to the concerns raised by this phenomenon. The world has changed since the Bretton Woods agreements. Therefore, a politically responsible solution must be sought for the issues of international regulation, liberalization, and the preservation of cultural identities.
