"Cursed Days" is the diary kept by Ivan Bunin during the first two years after the tragic events of 1917 that not only dismantled the old regime but also the entire traditional way of life of Russian society.
The overturning of circumstances, the emergence of new wild morals, the massacres, enslavement, humiliations, the constant terror, and the unclear future are meticulously yet sensitively recorded by the author, wanting to leave a testimony of the time when a part of the Russian people attempted to leap into the future but found itself in a void.
Ivan Bunin holds a special, distinct place in 20th-century Russian literature. Not only because he was the first Russian writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize, but because he was essentially the one who, with his works and ethics, built a strong and solid bridge connecting 19th-century Russian literature with that of the 20th.
A gentleman in life and literature, he never accepted unfreedom as a proposal for social organization, whether it concerned the Tsarist regime or that of the Bolsheviks. Rejecting the new Soviet power, after wandering through the fires and ruins of the Civil War, he emigrated to Western Europe, where he unfolded his talent, always carrying deep within him the nostalgia for the lost homeland and the Russian way of life.
Dimitris B. Triantafyllidis studied philosophy in Kiev and Theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He worked for several years in technical education and even more as a journalist in newspapers and magazines. He has translated dozens of books by Russian writers, poets, and thinkers.
From the Epikentro Editions, his book "Resident of Metaxourgeio: Crisis Diary," "Letters from Russia," is published. He has translated "Russian Easter Stories," "Letters from the Gulags," "Communism as a Religion," and he introduces the Greek edition of "The Invention of Modern Russia" by Arkady Ostrovsky.
