Description

Description

The concise presentation of the ideas and positions of Paschalis Kitromilides leads us to a series of observations when compared to the perceptions, mentalities, behaviors, myths, and stereotypes that prevailed in Greece during the crisis.

Where the need to return to the roots of Enlightenment is supported, the dominant perceptions in Greek society were expressed through a blind anti-Westernism, along with attributing all the blame for the Greek crisis to the evil foreigners.

Where Enlightenment proposes the need to accept our immaturity and strive to overcome it, a whirlwind of irrationality swept through the country, fueled by the rhetoric of anti-memorandum sentiment.

Where the European project is considered the best thing that has emerged in our country, we admired authoritarian regimes, such as that of Venezuela, and sought our economic salvation in Russia and China.

Where individualism and hard work are regarded as ethical imperatives, the majority of Greek society seeks comfort within state structures through the well-known clientelistic networks.

Where self-awareness is considered an integral part of an individual's personality, we turned a blind eye and stubbornly refused to understand the causes of the crisis and to attempt to address them.

This comparative presentation also indicates the extent of the "Greek problem," which is wrongly treated as a one-dimensional economic issue. The problem runs much deeper, as it stems from perceptions and mentalities that are very difficult to change. It is a profoundly anthropological issue.
