Cervical spondylosis is a pathological condition characterized by the degeneration of the intervertebral discs and vertebral bodies of the cervical spine. The body creates bony formations known as osteophytes to help support the degenerated joints. Osteophytes cause swelling of the spinal joints and spinal stenosis. The result is pain and stiffness.
Nerve pressure causes symptoms that are the main warning signs of cervical spondylosis:
- headache
- dizziness
- neck stiffness
- neck pain
- pain extending to the upper limbs
- instability in walking
Patients often describe dull or sharp pain in the neck or between the shoulder blades, pain radiating down the arm or fingers, or numbness or tingling in the shoulder or arm. Certain positions or movements of the neck may exacerbate the pain.
