Description

Description

The second volume of the "HISTORY OF MODERN GREEK THEATRE" is published in 3 parts. The second part follows the evolution of theatrical life in Greece mainly during the decade of 1910-1920.

New and unknown information is added regarding figures and events that have been mentioned in previous sections of the work, and with a focus on the personality of Foti Politi, the efforts to establish the National Theatre are examined.

The most notable amateur theatrical groups of the decade are thoroughly presented (from the Lecture Company and the Amateur Society to the Theatre of Odeon and the Greek Theatre Company, which transcend their initially amateur character to become two of the most significant troupes of the era), the drama schools, the performances of the two leading actresses who dominate, Marika Kotopouli and Kyveli, and other, less known, troupes.

The systematic monitoring of theatrical activity is complemented by the presentation of data on musical theatre, operetta, revue, as well as the war dramas that flourish during this period, while the influence of significant political and social events on the lives of actors, the functioning of troupes, audience reactions, and the press's stance is also outlined.
