Description

Description

The new SYNTAX OF ANCIENT GREEK stands out for its completeness and provides solutions to every syntactic phenomenon, indicating the correct position for questions and doubts that arise. It is a valuable study guide for the student who attempts to delve into the structure of the ancient Greek language and the understanding of the texts of Attic writers, as well as for the teacher who seeks a useful tool for teaching the subject of Syntax.
The structure of the book is:
a) "Methodology for approaching the original text," where the steps of analyzing the unknown text are presented in an easily comprehensible manner.
b) Theory, in which "difficult" syntactic phenomena are addressed with distinct methodicalness, such as the verbal adjectives in -tos and -teos, hypothetical statements and their conversion to other types, direct and indirect speech, the attraction of the relative, elliptical relative comparative clauses, latent hypothetical statements, etc. The steps of analyzing participles in corresponding clauses, the condensation of clauses into corresponding participles, the conversion of direct speech into indirect and vice versa, the active voice into passive and vice versa, and the transformation of hypothetical statements into dependent ones and vice versa are presented vividly.
c) 7500 Exercises, given with hierarchical difficulty and in various forms to maintain the student's interest, covering all syntactic phenomena but mainly the "difficult" syntactic phenomena mentioned above. Specially selected texts, excerpts from Attic writers, corresponding to each syntactic phenomenon, complement the exercise section.
A table of verbs categorized according to their meaning completes the entire effort.

Like the rest of Hatzithoma's ancient Greek textbooks, this one also has incredible exercise material and a comprehensible explanation of the theory.
