The culmination of love in death and the idea of eternal night that dissolves bonds with music and shatters the shackles of light, freeing people from the false cheerfulness of "life" and gifting them in the Beyond with the desired and pursued inner peace, are the two central points around which this sui generis work of Thomas Mann revolves.
He called it a novella, and it may indeed be so. However, what is certain is that the work has only a means, or rather is entirely a means, since the beginning and the end coincide in darkness, in the baptism of man in the waters of darkness, in his repatriation to the ancient Black, accompanied by the most secret art: music.
