Safari Mythical Minis - Cyclops
The Greeks lived in a land with active volcanoes. The smoke and fire escaping from a mountain needed some explanation. Some thought that the volcanoes were the workshops of the gods, where giants like the Cyclops worked with fire and anvils.
Homer made Poseidon the father of the Cyclops, while other ancient Greeks wrote that the giants descended from the Titans. In any case, all agreed that they were strong, lawless beings, not to be messed with.
While Homer saw them as shepherds, other writers believed that the Cyclopes were blacksmiths and metalworkers. The great Cyclops Polyphemus raised his mark again, trying to catch the new scent. This was something else. Leaving his sheep, the Cyclops tumbled down a hill, crushing rocks under his feet as he walked.
