The school book for the Social & Political Education course of the 6th grade of primary school. Dikaiopolis is the hero of Aristophanes' play "Acharnians." In this play, Dikaiopolis defends peace during the Peloponnesian War between the Athenians and Spartans. However, he does not convince his Athenian fellow citizens to follow his example, so he decides alone to make peace for himself and his family. In his own way, he demonstrates the benefits of peace and satirizes the warlike faction of the Athenian people of that time.
In an ingenious way, Aristophanes chose the name Dikaiopolis for his hero from the words: Dikaios + Polis (Justice + City). On one hand, we have the "city," which is the space where people live, engage in activities, and usually share a similar way of life and perhaps common goals. On the other hand, there is "justice," related to the rules by which human life is organized aiming at their harmonious coexistence and progress.
Peace took her name from the comedy of the same name by Aristophanes. This play refers to the conclusion of peace between Athenians and Spartans and shows great similarities with "Acharnians," as it expresses the citizens' longing for peace. Peace is a goddess whom War has imprisoned in a deep cave. Trygaeus, the hero of the play, invites the people to free her. Everyone rushes willingly and finally manages to save her.
