As a historian, C. Nepos had a modest reputation in ancient times. During the Middle Ages, he became completely unknown, only to be revived from oblivion during the Renaissance, when his simplicity, clarity, and grace in storytelling were appreciated.
In modern times, questions arose regarding the authenticity of C. Nepos’s lives, and it was disputed whether he wrote these lives. Many attributed them to the Byzantine writer Probus. However, research has not accepted these views, and so the lives are still attributed to Nepos today.
Although C. Nepos in his lives cannot distinguish the essential from the trivial, nor does he rely on sources, the lives are still worth reading even today.
