And behold! Inkerman The Balaclava The cannons, the ‘kurgan’ The Charge Lord Largan The Light Brigade Florence Nightingale The ‘Boze Tsaria Khrani’ Bombs and bullets and dead Above the graves And above the deaths The vigor of the earth! Soft grass grows ‘Youth, Youth, Adolescence’ Cossacks, Sevastopol The epics of Tolstoy The grass of the divine Eroska And through the souls Joy of the evergreens Evergreens and Undying Oh, I yearn for Russia!
This long narrative poem (239 verses) was written by Andreas Embirikos after his trip to the Soviet Union in December 1962 (Odessa-Moscow-Leningrad), with Odysseas Elytis, George Theotokas, and Dr. S. Spiliopoulos from Thessaloniki, following an invitation from the 'USSR-Greece' Association.
“The poem,” writes G. Yatromanolakis, “can be read on many levels: as an autobiographical text, soaked as it is in memories of his childhood and youth; [...] as a historical document but also as an intelligent and careful political commentary of a critical era, now outdated [...].”
The poem was first published in 1995, edited by George Yatromanolakis, in a special plaque for the 20th anniversary of the poet's death. In 2001, it was published by Agra publishers along with the diary that Embirikos kept during this trip, accompanied by photographs he took in Russia.
