Dear students of the 5th grade,
During the two previous school years, in 3rd and 4th grade, you traveled through the books of History to "the very old times" and to "ancient times." You got to know places, peoples, and people. You listened, read, and learned many things about their life, their works, and their culture.
This year, the fascinating journey of history continues "into the Byzantine years." It is a long period of about sixteen centuries (146 B.C. - 1453 A.D.). During this span of time, many important events took place, both pleasant and unpleasant. The life, works, and culture of people "in the Byzantine years" will therefore be the subject of this year's history lesson and your school textbook.
In the teaching units of your book, besides the texts, there are pictures, maps, historical timelines, and testimonial texts written by people who lived in that era. All of these are related to the lesson texts and are intended to help you understand them.
We hope that with this book and with the help of your teachers, you will also make this year a useful and enjoyable "historical" journey, and that the view of the history of our ancestors will be even more fascinating for you this year.
Have a good school year.
