Read an excerpt

In 1879, the German anatomist W. Flemming (Walther Flemming) discovered (after staining) in the nucleus (of salamander embryo cells) a characteristic thread-like material. By observing the cells at various stages of their life, he noticed that the threads making up this material, after shortening and thickening, "split" in order to be distributed to the descendants of the cell. He named the sequence of these phenomena mitosis, from the Greek word "mitos," which means "thread." Today, we know that the threads described by W. Flemming are chromosomes, the carriers of genes, and that mitosis is the main type of division in eukaryotic cells.
