The following information shows how to go up and down stairs easily and safely, using the cane:
Going up stairs:
- Hold onto the staircase handrail.
- Transfer the cane with the opposite hand.
- Start with your stronger leg. Take the first step.
- Continue by carefully and slowly taking the next step with the weaker leg.
- Note: do not rush and do not step two stairs at the same time.
Going down stairs:
- First make sure the surface is not slippery.
- Ensure there is no obstacle in front of you.
- The first time you go down the stairs may be difficult, so ask your caregiver for assistance.
- Hold onto the handrail (if there is none, make sure you are stable enough and balanced).
- Lower the cane as well as your weaker leg and take a slow first step.
- Then lower the other leg and step onto the same step.
- Note: do not rush and do not step onto two stairs at the same time.
- Repeat until you reach the end of the stairs.
