The basic operations between real numbers are two: addition and multiplication. With their help, the operations of subtraction and division are performed respectively. The addition of two real numbers is done according to the following rules, where we first examine whether these numbers have the same sign or different signs. To add two numbers with the same sign, we add their absolute values and assign the common sign to the sum. To add two numbers with different signs, we subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger one and assign the sign of the number with the larger absolute value to the difference.
