Description & Specifications

In this book, the author of THE PERFECT STORM and WAR explores why men long for war, why Londoners missed the Blitz, and what we can learn from Native American captives who refused to return home.

Tribe analyzes post-traumatic stress and the challenges veterans face when they return to society. Sebastian Junger, with his anthropological approach, argues that the problem does not lie with the veterans or the trauma they have experienced, but with the society they are trying to rejoin.

One of the strangest aspects of veterans experiencing PTSD is that most of them never even saw combat, yet they feel intensely alienated and out of place in their homeland. The reason may lie in our natural tendency, as a species, to live in groups of thirty to fifty people who are utterly dependent on one another for safety, comfort, and a sense of purpose: in short, a soldier's life.

One of the ironies of the modern age is that as prosperity increases in a society, so do the rates of suicide, depression, and naturally PTSD. In a wealthy society, people do not need to cooperate with one another, resulting in them often living much lonelier lives, a condition that leads to psychological distress. However, there is a way for modern society to reverse this trend, and the study of how veterans respond upon their return may offer a clue on how to achieve this. But it will not be easy.
