Description

Known since ancient times as a panacea for many ailments, as well as for wound healing. The plant was dedicated to the goddess Artemis because it was believed to facilitate childbirth, which is why she is usually depicted crowned with dittany branches. It was once particularly popular as the herb of 'love and youth,' and it was believed to enhance sexual arousal. In the Middle Ages, dittany became famous due to its use in the renowned digestif liqueur, Benedictine.

Known for its hemostatic action, it has been observed that injured wild goats in Crete often eat dittany in order to heal. There are historical records indicating that wounded deer from archers would consume dittany, and the arrow would retreat from the wound!

It is a rare plant, one of the most important nectar-producing plants, particularly known for its soothing action against pain. It is found only on the steep cliffs of the Cretan mountains at an altitude of about 1400 meters. Four related species grow on certain islands of the Aegean and in some mountains of Southern Greece. Wild dittany is a rare find, and its collection is extremely challenging. In recent years, it has been cultivated. Its useful parts include the woolly heart-shaped leaves and the purplish flowering tops.

Dittany has some significant properties such as:

  • Relieves headaches and toothaches.
  • Soothes stomach pain and colitis.
  • It is known for its healing properties. It is still recommended for the removal of bacteria from the oral cavity and for combating bad breath. It is also recommended for certain skin conditions.
  • Additionally, it is diuretic, choleretic, emmenagogue, and hemostatic.
