Description

Description

The Pan-Europe, the magnum opus of Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, was first published in Vienna in 1923. Written shortly after the end of World War I, the work aimed primarily at avoiding further bloodshed among European nations as well as preventing a future Soviet/Russian invasion.

The author presented and justified his belief that in order for Europe not to become a battlefield for the great global powers again, and to withstand international economic competition, it must unite into a confederation consisting of all European states. For this unification to be possible, a gradual replacement of every national identity and consciousness with a common European one for all would be necessary.

Regardless of how accurate the author's predictions ultimately were – sometimes not at all, and at other times impressively so – it is undeniable that the manifesto of Pan-Europe profoundly influenced 20th-century political thought, to the extent that it is regarded by many as a precursor to today's European Union.

This edition essentially constitutes the first complete translation of the work into Greek, without cuts or distortions. Previous editions, long out of print and hard to find, based on a translation from the 1920s, omit many sections of the original and alter the spirit of the author, not to mention intervening to "correct" or arbitrarily add references related to Greece.

We believe that the publication of this always relevant work is useful both for the researcher and for the average reader, who can discern the way in which political lines are drawn that influence the course of history over many decades.
