Description

Description

The first book refers to Cyrus's secret preparation for his "Anabasis" and the battle at Cunaxa in 401 B.C., where the Greeks defeat the Persians, but Cyrus is killed. The other three books describe the assassination of the Greek generals in the tent of the treacherous satrap Tissaphernes and the assumption of leadership of the Ten Thousand by Xenophon for their heroic "retreat" amid various difficulties, both from continuous enemy attacks and hardships through the towering and snowy Carduchian mountains in the winter of 400 B.C., until they finally reach Trapezus, shouting "thalatta – thalatta" and humiliating with their salvation the vast Persian empire with its millions of soldiers, which could not suppress a handful of Greeks within its own territory.
