As Brendan Simms' major new biography shows, Hitler's primary preoccupation was not, as is widely believed, the threat of Bolshevism, but that of international capitalism and Anglo-America. These two fears led to both his anti-Semitism and his determination to secure the 'living space' necessary to survive in a world dominated by the British Empire and the United States.
Drawing on new sources, Brendan Simms outlines how Hitler's ideology emerged after World War I. In his opinion, the United States and the British Empire were models for Germany’s empire, also founded on land appropriation, racism, and violence. Hitler aimed to create a global future for Germany - a country that seemed doomed not only to insignificance but, through migration and foreign influence, to extinction.
His primary concern during the ensuing cataclysm was not just what he saw as the conflict between Germans and Jews, or Germans and Slavs, but above all, that between Germans and those he called 'Anglo-Saxons'. In the end, only world domination would suffice to achieve Hitler’s goals, and ultimately it took an alliance of almost the entire world to defeat him. Brendan Simms' new book is the first to fully explain Hitler's beliefs, showing how, as always, ideas are the ultimate source of the deadliest behavior.
