This book is aimed at those interested in the policies implemented in the agricultural sector of Southern Chios during the period 1939-1989 and their results in what we have come to call the "agricultural landscape." It is a reference book for the history of the Greek countryside in the second half of the 20th century and the complexity of the causes that shape the agricultural landscape over time.

Drawing on data from the entire institutional archive of the Chios Mastiha Producers Union, it records changes in production and cultivation, highlights the functioning of the secondary cooperative organization, its direct and indirect intervention in the agricultural economy of Southern Chios, the acceptance and consequences of its policies, as well as the different choices that mastiha producers sometimes followed in the villages.

At the same time, it examines - for the same period - the central directions of the Greek state regarding agricultural production and the impact of these directions on the choices of mastiha producers and the landscape of Southern Chios. The methodological approach taken allows the reader to understand the complexity of the mechanisms shaping the agricultural landscape as a result of a chain of interdependencies: from central policies to their specifications and adaptations and, ultimately, to their acceptance or differentiation by the mastiha producers.
