Description & Specifications

Now a major film directed by Armando Iannucci, starring Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, and Ben Whishaw. The great novel written by Dickens, now in a beautiful clothbound edition from Penguin. This is the novel Dickens regarded as his ‘favorite child’ and is considered his most autobiographical. As David narrates his experiences from childhood to discovering his vocation as a successful novelist, Dickens draws openly and revealingly from his own life. Among the wonderfully vivid characters are Rosa Dartle, Dora, Steerforth, and the ‘humble’ Uriah Heep, along with Mr. Micawber, a portrait of Dickens’ father that evokes a mix of love, nostalgia, and guilt. Dickens’ great Bildungsroman (based, in part, on his own childhood) is a work full of life, both comic and tragic. Charles Dickens (1812-70) had his first, sensational success with his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, and never looked back. In an extraordinarily busy life, he wrote, campaigned, and spoke on a vast range of topics and was engaged with many of the major aspects of Victorian life, alternating between persuasion, emotion, and irritation. He completed fourteen full novels and volumes of journalism. Of all his many works, he called David Copperfield his ‘favorite child’. Pages: 1024, Dimensions: 13.6x13.6cm
