The epic biography of the legendary guitarist who changed the game ... Meticulous research, insightful and well-written. 8/10, Classic Rock
"A tender and ruthless depiction of the pinnacle of metal guitar." Mojo
Arriving in California as a young boy in the early 1960s, Edwin Van Halen and his brother Alex encountered the upcoming music revolution. Sons of a Dutch father who played saxophone, the brothers discovered the Beatles, Cream and other greats. By the time their influential debut was released in 1978, Van Halen set a high standard for the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, creating an entirely new style of hard rock post the '60s and becoming the quintessential Californian band of the 1980s. However, there was an underlying tragedy in their story as Eddie's struggles played out publicly, from his difficult relationship with the band's original vocalist, Dave Lee Roth, to abusive behavior, divorce, and his long battle with cancer.
With unique insights, Paul Brannigan's Eruption goes beyond the headlines and explores the cultural and social contexts that shaped this iconic guitarist, while intensifying the life lived at eleven.
