Unparalleled in ingenuity, technical skill, and curiosity, Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) embodies the humanistic ideal of the Renaissance man: an unsurpassed master of painting, sculpture, cartography, anatomy, architecture – and much more. Leonardo's works continue to captivate art historians, collectors, and millions of visitors who gather annually to admire his artistry.
His image has permeated nearly every aspect of Western culture – The Vitruvian Man is engraved on millions of euro coins, The Last Supper is regarded as the most reproduced religious painting in history, and the Mona Lisa has enchanted countless artists and viewers for centuries.
This updated edition of our XL monograph offers a unique overview of Leonardo's life and work, including a catalog of everything he painted. Through wonderful details, we experience every measured stroke, each demonstrating Leonardo's masterful skill. An extensive catalog of nearly 700 drawings by Leonardo further illuminates the breadth of his pursuits.
From diagrams of complex machines to portraits of chubby infants, these reflect his boundless and visionary technical imagination, balanced with a subtle and penetrating gaze, capable of depicting everyday moments with poignant emotional tone. For the new edition, Frank Zöllner has written a new preface in which he examines the latest scientific findings regarding Leonardo's work and offers a critical look at the much-discussed painting "Christ as the Savior of the World," which sold at auction for the record amount of approximately 400 million euros. Many of the illustrations have been replaced with new photographs.
