Description & Specifications

With full-color artworks, maps, and carefully selected illustrations, this captivating book explores the Teutonic Knights and their Lithuanian opponents during the epic Lithuanian Crusade. The Teutonic Knights were a military order dedicated to expanding Christianity eastwards into the non-Christian areas of the Baltic and Russia. They gradually expanded their control over various hostile Baltic tribes until they confronted the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a relatively organized and cohesive state. The book is fully illustrated and examines the fighters on both sides, assessing their origins, tactics, weaponry, and combat effectiveness in three key engagements of the Lithuanian Crusade. The Battle of Voplawki (1311), which resulted from a major Lithuanian offensive against newly Christianized areas, saw the Teutonic Knights defeat the numerous but relatively poorly equipped Lithuanian raiders. As a result, the Lithuanians began preparing for full-scale war, and the Siege of Kaunas (1362) was the month-long investment of the first brick castle built by the Lithuanians. At the Battle of Grunwald (1410), the forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, with knights nearly comparable to those of the Order, crushed the armies of the Teutonic Knights, a defeat from which the Order could never truly recover. This vivid study sheds light on these formidable medieval warriors and three battles that shaped the Baltic world.
