I took the trouble to write this review to help those who are interested in buying this TV. The review concerns the 43" model with software version 03.20.61.
Overall, the TV comes pre-set with a bunch of "smart" AI features or energy-saving settings, etc. I found them problematic and I must admit that I was shocked by how poor the sound and image quality was until I figured out what was going on.
Also, as soon as it turns on for the first time, it asks for registration and creating an account on www.lgappstv.com, which, if I remember correctly, is divided into 2 or 3 sections that you have to agree to (where exactly you agree is several pages) in order to access certain features of the TV. This was the first step that had to be done before even seeing the image. I didn't understand why it was necessary to agree to everything, but on the other hand, access to features based on consent has become tiresome. I won't go into details because I didn't understand how it works. If I find out more, I will update.
So, initially, don't be scared. Disable any "smart" function, settings that are not clear what they do, or settings that save "something" and start from scratch.
Overall
Compared to other models in the category in expos, it has more or less the expected build quality. The plastics are average (probably good), while the frame around the panel is very thin, almost invisible. It has a central support that forms a crescent moon. This suited me because I didn't have space for a TV with legs on the edges. However, if you want to place devices underneath it, it might be a problem.
Remote Control
It is large, slightly old-fashioned, and heavy, but it has everything you need, including dedicated buttons for streaming channels (Netflix, Disney+, etc.). It also has a microphone for those interested in using voice commands (I didn't try if they work in Greek). It can also function as a "mouse" with a little practice. The TV can be connected via Bluetooth as well.
Viewing Angle
It is very sensitive to the viewing angle, both horizontally and vertically. A small movement is enough for the contrast and color accuracy to change dramatically. So, depending on where you plan to place it, you may need to have it slightly tilted to achieve the best angle. Keep this in mind if you want to see it in an expo before making a purchase. I saw it in a large store in Syntagma, side by side with another LG model that interested me. So, I had the opportunity to see both of them live (in completely wrong viewing positions, of course, as a young salesman told me, they put the "big ones" in the good positions).
Menu
It is really slow. Very slow. Sometimes you wait to see what will happen while wondering if you pressed the right button. However, it responds immediately to the +/- channel and volume options. Overall, it is detailed and you can have direct access to the last function you edited.
Panel Quality
It reflects a lot and reflects any light source in the room. However, for its price category, it is not bad. When the signal is good, it delivers decent colors, tones, and contrast.
Sound
The sound is loud and generally clear. There is the possibility of intervention through the 5-channel equalizer, which improves performance considerably. Obviously, it cannot be compared to the quality of a sound bar or a home theater system, but for watching TV and streaming services at reasonable volumes, I think it will adequately meet expectations. Generally, sound as a parameter of this television is the easiest to reach decent levels (unlike the picture). It has an automatic sound leveling feature that helps prevent sudden changes in volume when switching channels. Finally, it has an AI function for optimal sound adjustment by detecting the room's acoustics through the microphone on the remote control! In practice, it didn't do much, so I went back to full manual settings.
Picture
And now we come to the crucial point, the picture. I will present a series of steps, as a methodology, to keep the review short and concise. If you follow them, I believe you will figure it out:
1. Download the manual from LG. It is quite informative and will save you time from experimenting.
2. Make yourself a cup of coffee and choose a time when your partner doesn't want to watch anything.
3. As I mentioned above, disable any pre-settings and start with full manual.
4. Keep in mind that different picture modes are available for HDR and non-HDR signals. I didn't understand why, but I noticed that the common ones are Vivid, Standard, Cinema, and FILMMAKER MODE. Also, even in the common modes, depending on the signal, the intermediate options are not always the same or not always available. If anyone else in the group knows how HDR affects the way settings are determined, please enlighten us.
Writing this review, I discovered that FILMMAKER MODE is something like a certification that the TV is capable of delivering the movie experience exactly as the creator intended (quoting as I found it, "watch your movies and TV shows the way the filmmakers intended"). This mode is likely the basis for your experiments (more here: https://www.whathifi.com/advice/what-is-filmmaker-mode-is-it-any-good-and-should-you-turn-it-on).
5. Choose a good image source. I used Netflix, where there are HD, HD HDR, 4K, and 4K HDR series. The signal from TV channels is HD (non-HDR). When the signal is HDR, the TV displays an icon in the upper left corner.
6. Select one of the common picture modes and start experimenting with HDR images. Keep the settings and repeat with non-HDR images.
7. Adjust over time until you achieve a setting that performs "well" with "all" signals.
Conclusion
In summary, I would say it is a decent purchase that should be judged based on its price range (≈ $400.00 with shipping) and adjusted according to our requirements and expectations. It is not the model that will be the center of attention in a living room, nor will it impress the masses. However, it can stand up as a low-budget purchase or a second TV in a bedroom or office. If you dedicate some time to experimenting with the settings, I believe you will be able to make the most of it for all types of entertainment.
Of course, I would prefer if the factory presets were closer to what I ultimately ended up with after experimenting, in order to avoid initial disappointment and save time.
I am still experimenting, and if there are any significant changes in the future (e.g., a new software version), I will come back with an update. Finally, download the manual from LG because it has quite interesting points.
The missing star is mainly for the slow menu.
Μπήκα στον κόπο να γράψω αυτή την κριτική για να βοηθήσω λίγο όσους ενδιαφέρονται για την αγορά αυτής της τηλεόρασης. Η κριτική αφορά το μοντέλο των 43” με software version 03.20.61.
Γενικά, η τηλεόραση έρχεται από το εργοστάσιο προ-ρυθμισμένη με ένα σωρό «έξυπνες» AI λειτουργίες ή ρυθμίσεις εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας κ.λπ. Εγώ τις βρήκα προβληματικές και ομολογώ ότι τρόμαξα από το πόσο κούφιο ήχο και κακή εικόνα αντίκρυσα μέχρι να καταλάβω τι γίνεται.
Επίσης, με το που ανοίγει πρώτη φορά ζητάει registration και δημιουργία account στο www.lgappstv.com, το οποίο με τη σειρά του, αν θυμάμαι καλά, χωρίζεται σε 2 ή 3 sections που καλείσαι να συμφωνήσεις (το που ακριβώς συμφωνείς είναι κάμποσες σελίδες) για να έχεις πρόσβαση σε κάποια features της τηλεόρασης. Αυτό ήταν το πρώτο βήμα που έπρεπε να γίνει πριν καν δεις εικόνα. Δεν κατάλαβα να χρειάζεται να συμφωνήσεις σε όλα, αλλά απ’ την άλλη, η πρόσβαση σε λειτουργίες με βάση το consent έχει αρχίσει αν γίνεται κουραστικό. Δεν μπαίνω σε λεπτομέρειες γιατί δεν το κατάλαβα πως λειτουργεί. Αν βρω περισσότερα θα κάνω update.
Αρχικά λοιπόν μην τρομάζετε. Απενεργοποιήστε οποιαδήποτε «έξυπνη» λειτουργία, ρυθμίσεις που δεν είναι ξεκάθαρο τι κάνουν ή ρυθμίσεις που εξοικονομούν «κάτι» και πάμε από την αρχή.
Γενικά
Συγκρίνοντάς τη με τα υπόλοιπα μοντέλα της κατηγορίας σε εκθέσεις, έχει λίγο - πολύ την αναμενόμενη ποιότητα κατασκευής. Τα πλαστικά είναι στο μέσο όρο (μάλλον καλά), ενώ το frame γύρω από το panel είναι πολύ λεπτό, σχεδόν αόρατο. Έχει ένα κεντρικό στήριγμα, που σχηματίζει μισοφέγγαρο. Αυτό με βόλεψε γιατί δεν είχα χώρο για τηλεόραση με ποδαράκια στις άκρες. Αν όμως θέλετε να βάλετε συσκευές από κάτω της, ίσως είναι πρόβλημα.
Τηλεκοντρόλ
Είναι μεγάλο, ελαφρώς παλιακό και βαρύ, αλλά έχει όλα όσα χρειάζεται, συμπεριλαμβανομένων κουμπιών αφιερωμένων σε κανάλια streaming (Netflix, Disney+ κ.λπ.). Επίσης έχει μικρόφωνο για όσους ενδιαφέρονται να αξιοποιήσουν τις φωνητικές εντολές (δεν δοκίμασα αν παίζουν στα Ελληνικά). Λειτουργεί και ως «ποντίκι» με λίγη προπόνηση. Με την τηλεόραση μπορεί να συνδεθεί και μέσω Bluetooth.
Γωνία θέασης
Είναι πολύ ευαίσθητη στη γωνία θέασης, τόσο αριστερά - δεξιά, όσο και πάνω - κάτω. Μια μικρή μετακίνηση αρκεί ώστε το contrast και η πιστότητα των χρωμάτων να μεταβληθούν σε τραγικό σημείο. Οπότε, ανάλογα με το σημείο που σκοπεύετε να την τοποθετήσετε, ίσως χρειαστεί να την έχετε ελαφρώς γυρισμένη για να πετύχετε την καλύτερη γωνία. Αυτό να το έχετε υπόψη αν θέλετε να τη δείτε σε κάποια έκθεση πριν προχωρήσετε σε αγορά. Εγώ την πέτυχα σε μεγάλο κατάστημα του Συντάγματος, δίπλα - δίπλα με ένα άλλο μοντέλο LG που μ’ ενδιέφερε. Έτσι είχα τη δυνατότητα να τις δω και τις δύο ζωντανά (σε τελείως λάθος θέση θέασης βέβαια, καθώς όπως μου είπε ένας νεαρός πωλητής, στις καλές θέσεις βάζουν τις «μεγάλες»).
Μενού
Είναι πραγματικά αργό. Πολύ αργό. Κάποιες φορές περιμένεις να δεις τι θα γίνει ενώ αναρωτιέσαι αν πάτησες το σωστό κουμπί. Όμως για τις επιλογές +/- κανάλια και ήχος ανταποκρίνεται άμεσα. Γενικά είναι λεπτομερές και μπορείς να έχεις απ’ απευθείας πρόσβαση στην τελευταία λειτουργία που επεξεργάστηκες.
Ποιότητα panel
Γυαλίζει πολύ και αντανακλά κάθε πηγή φωτός που βρίσκεται στο δωμάτιο. Ωστόσο, για την κατηγορία της τιμής δεν είναι κακό. Όταν το σήμα είναι καλό, τότε αποδίδει αξιοπρεπώς χρώματα, τόνους και contrast.
Ήχος
Ο ήχος είναι δυνατός και γενικά διαυγής. Υπάρχει η δυνατότητα επέμβασης μέσω του ισοσταθμιστή 5 καναλιών που βελτιώνει αρκετά την απόδοση. Προφανώς, δεν μπορεί να συγκριθεί με την ποιότητα μιας sound bar ή ενός συστήματος home theatre, αλλά για θέαση TV και streaming services σε λογικές εντάσεις, νομίζω ότι θα καλύψει αξιοπρεπώς τις προσδοκίες. Γενικά, ο ήχος ως παράμετρος της εν λόγω τηλεόρασης, είναι το πιο εύκολο να έρθει σε αξιοπρεπή επίπεδα (σε αντίθεση με την εικόνα). Διαθέτει αυτόματο leveling ήχου που βοηθάει να μην ανεβοκατεβαίνει απότομα η ένταση αλλάζοντας κανάλια. Τέλος, διαθέτει μια ΑΙ λειτουργία βέλτιστης ρύθμισης του ήχου ανιχνεύοντας την ακουστική του δωματίου μέσω του μικροφώνου στο τηλεκοντρόλ! Στην πράξη δεν έκανε και πολλά, οπότε ξαναγύρισα στις full manual ρυθμίσεις.
Εικόνα
Και ερχόμαστε στο φλέγον θέμα, την εικόνα. Θα παραθέσω μια σειρά από βήματα, σα μεθοδολογία, για να κρατήσω την κριτική μικρή και περιεκτική. Αν τα ακολουθήσετε, πιστεύω ότι θα βγάλετε άκρη:
1. Κατεβάστε το manual από την LG. Είναι αρκετά κατατοπιστικό και θα εξοικονομήσετε χρόνο από πειράματα.
2. Φτιάξτε καφεδάκι και επιλέξτε μια ώρα που ο/η σύντροφος/σύζυγος δε θέλει να δει τίποτα.
3. Όπως είπα και παραπάνω, απενεργοποιήστε οποιαδήποτε προ-ρύθμιση και ξεκινήστε full manual.
4. Έχετε υπόψη σας ότι άλλα mode εικόνας είναι διαθέσιμα σε σήμα HDR και άλλα σε non-HDR. Το γιατί δεν το κατάλαβα, αλλά πρόσεξα ότι τα κοινά είναι τα Vivid (Ζωηρόχρωμο), Standard (Πρότυπο), Cinema (Σινεμά) και FILMMAKER MODE. Επίσης, ακόμα και στα κοινά modes, ανάλογα με το σήμα, οι παραμέσα επιλογές δεν είναι πάντα οι ίδιες ή δεν είναι πάντα διαθέσιμες. Αν γνωρίζει κάποιος άλλος στην παρέα πως το HDR αλλάζει τον τρόπο που καθορίζονται οι ρυθμίσεις παρακαλώ να μας διαφωτίσει.
Γράφοντάς αυτή την κριτική ανακάλυψα ότι το FILMMAKER MODE είναι κάτι σαν πιστοποίηση ότι η τηλεόραση είναι ικανή να αποδώσει την αίσθηση της ταινίας όπως ακριβώς θέλει ο δημιουργός της (αντιγράφω όπως το βρήκα «watch your movies and TV shows the way the filmmakers intended»). Πιθανώς αυτό το mode να είναι η βάση των πειραματισμών σας (περισσότερα εδώ: https://www.whathifi.com/advice/what-is-filmmaker-mode-is-it-any-good-and-should-you-turn-it-on).
5. Επιλέξτε μια καλή πηγή εικόνας. Εγώ χρησιμοποίηση το Netflix, όπου υπάρχουν σειρές HD, HD HDR, 4K και 4K HDR. Το σήμα των τηλεοπτικών καναλιών είναι HD (non-HDR). Όταν το σήμα είναι HDR η τηλεόραση βγάζει πάνω αριστερά ένα εικονίδιο.
6. Επιλέξτε ένα από τα κοινά mode εικόνας και ξεκινήστε τα πειράματα σε εικόνα HDR. Κρατήστε τις ρυθμίσεις και επαναλάβετε σε εικόνα non-HDR.
7. Προσαρμόστε σε βάθος χρόνου μέχρι να πετύχετε μια ρύθμιση που αποδίδει «καλά» σε «όλα» τα σήματα.
Συμπέρασμα
Συνοπτικά θα έλεγα ότι είναι μια αξιοπρεπής αγορά που θα πρέπει να την κρίνουμε με βάση την κατηγορία τιμής της (≈ 400,00 με τα μεταφορικά) και να αναπροσαρμόσουμε ανάλογα τις απαιτήσεις και τις προσδοκίες μας. Δεν είναι το μοντέλο που θα γίνει πόλος έλξης σε ένα σαλόνι, ούτε θα εντυπωσιάσει τα πλήθη. Όμως μπορεί να σταθεί επάξια ως μια αγορά low budget ή μια 2η τηλεόραση σε κρεβατοκάμαρα ή γραφείο. Αν αφιερώσετε λίγο χρόνο για πειραματισμό με τις ρυθμίσεις πιστεύω ότι θα καταφέρετε να την αξιοποιήσετε για όλα τα θεάματα.
Θα προτιμούσα φυσικά οι εργοστασιακές προ-ρυθμίσεις να είναι κοντά σ’ αυτό που τελικά κατέληξα μετά από πειραματισμό, ώστε να αποφύγω την αρχική απογοήτευση και να εξοικονομήσω χρόνο.
Εγώ εξακολουθώ να πειραματίζομαι και αν υπάρξει κάποια σημαντική αλλαγή στο μέλλον (π.χ. νέο software version) θα επανέλθω με update. Τέλος, κατεβάστε το manual από την LG γιατί έχει αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα σημεία.
Το χαμένο αστεράκι είναι κυρίως για το αργό μενού.
