In relation to PWM controllers, which distribute the generated energy from the photovoltaic panel to the batteries at about 80%, the remaining energy of approximately 20% is lost because simple PWM charge controllers do not detect the maximum power point of the photovoltaic array.

The smart functions of an MPPT controller regarding charging and battery equalization guarantee better charging and maintenance, resulting in an extension of their lifespan. MPPT charge controllers are ideal for larger systems where the additional energy collection of 20% or more is worthwhile and for cases where the voltage of the solar array is significantly higher than the battery voltage.
