The Jujube is a deciduous tree with drooping branches and a shape reminiscent of a sculpture. It has compound leaves, oval, glossy, leathery, with spiny stipules. The fruits are fleshy drupes with a slightly acidic taste, initially green, yellow later, and reddish in autumn.

It usually thrives in mild climates but can tolerate up to -15 in northern areas. It has no special requirements, except for well-draining soil, and prefers sunny planting positions.

The fruits resemble olives when unripe, gradually turning brown when they ripen in autumn. They taste like a ripe apple. When intended for fresh consumption, they are harvested as soon as their skin acquires the characteristic dark color.

The fruit contains flavonoids, mucilage, saponins, sugars, vitamins A, B2, C, trace elements, calcium, and iron. The seeds contain saponins and essential oils. The bark of the Jujube contains tannins and is astringent.

It is used in both Western and Chinese herbal medicine. In China, the Da Zao variety is used to stimulate the spleen and stomach, to address dyspnea, in severe emotional disorders, in nerve weakness, and more.
