The Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is also known as Elder, Sambucus, Black Elder, and European Elder. It is a group of about 30 plants that thrive primarily in temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
The useful parts of the Elderberry are its leaves, flowers, and fruits. It is mainly used for treating influenza and its symptoms. Elderberry contains potassium nitrate and is rich in vitamins (mainly A, B, C).
The leaves act as an external emollient and healing agent, as well as an internal laxative, expectorant, diuretic, and sudorific. Additionally, they are used in a crushed form for bruises, sprains, and wounds, usually as a warm compress.
For colds and fevers, Elderberry is combined with:
- Mint
- Yarrow
- Hyssop
For influenza, it is combined with Agrimony and for a runny nose with Goldenrod.
Herbs are and should be treated as medications. It is advisable to consult your doctor before taking them.
