Description

The Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara - coltsfoot) or Hauy-leaf is a herbaceous, perennial plant with yellow flowers resembling small daisies. It grows in moist soils, mainly in Europe and northern Asia, and in Greece, it is commonly found in the spring at high altitudes.

Its flowers have a pleasant scent and a sweet, aromatic taste. They contain arnidiol, faradiol, tannin, mucilage, flavonoids, taraxanthin, and essential oil.

Coltsfoot has been known since ancient times primarily as a remedy for respiratory issues. Dioscorides and Hippocrates recommended it for the treatment of chronic cough, rhinitis, sore throat, bronchitis, and asthma due to its expectorant and demulcent properties.

It is also used to relieve arthritic and rheumatic pains as well as toothache, always in the form of an infusion. However, coltsfoot in large quantities is considered toxic, so advice from a doctor is necessary for its use.

Its use is prohibited in children and individuals with liver problems. Herbs should be treated as medications. It is recommended to consult a doctor before taking them.
