The madder or dyer's madder or rubia or dyer's root (Rubia tinctorum) is a plant with strong properties.

Madder was particularly useful in the past because a red dye, suitable for dyeing yarns, is produced from its root. In Ampelakia, Larissa, the first agricultural cooperative was established in the 18th century, which dealt with dyeing yarns from madder, which conquered the European markets. The dye derived from madder has alizarin as its main component.

It is boiled in water and used for dyeing yarns and fabrics. Vinegar and salt are also used in the mixture, as they help fix the dye.

Easter eggs dyed with madder root not only have a unique color but are also indelible. They do not stain hands, and the dye does not penetrate inside them. The result is a deep red color.

We boil water with vinegar & Madder Root for 20 minutes. Let it cool. Then strain and add the eggs to boil them. Leave the eggs in the water until they are as red as you want. The resulting color will range from orange to red, depending on the dyeing time.
