Δεν χρειάζεται να είναι smart για να χρησιμοποιεί ethernet. Μπορεί πχ να υποστηρίζει DLNA ή να μπορεί μέσω του τοπικού δικτύου να δείχνει εικόνες από κάποιο smartphone. Επίσης μερικές τηλεοράσεις χρησιμοποιούν ethernet (με σύνδεση στο internet) για να κατεβάζουν καινούργιο firmware.
