Description & Specifications

The Kunstkammern, or cabinets of art and curiosity housed in a dedicated room or series of chambers, were often filled with thousands of diverse and sometimes shocking items that reflected the abundance of nature and human creativity. These range from an apricot tree carved with dozens of faces to a complex drinking cup made from a rhinoceros head. Whether serving as an environment for personal reflection, or as a display of the wealth and prestige of their owners, these early museums impressed visitors of the time. This book offers the first in-depth comparative examination of the history, theory, organization, and character of the main Kunstkammern in the Holy Roman Empire. Pages: 336, Dimensions: 19x19cm
