Description & Specifications

The crises arising from wars or other upheavals disrupt individuals' lives and leave marks on a community for many years after the event. This volume aims to explore how these crises are remembered in the ancient world and how communities are reorganized after a crisis. Can crises act as catalysts for innovation or change? What do crises reveal about the "normalcy" against which they are defined and framed? People living in post-crisis societies have no choice but to adapt to the changes caused by the crisis. This adaptation raises the question of how the relationship between the pre-crisis state and the new normalcy is constructed and by whom. Due to the limited capability to use the immediate past, which is stigmatized by conflicts and bad memories, it may include revisions of historical narratives regarding shared memories and identities, through the selection of new "anchors" and sometimes even the rejection of the old ones. Crises affect all areas of life, and recovery from the crisis also covers different spheres. This volume traces recovery strategies in texts as well as in visual representations, in both literary and documentary texts, in official ideology as well as subordinate reactions. Contributors gather the diverse testimonies of such coping methods that have survived from antiquity.
