ANDROMACHE WHEN THE ICE MELTS
If the ice melts, if the birds and the forests disappear, if the soil dries out in one place and floods in another, what will truly become of all that we have loved so much? What will happen to the myths? Perhaps they will remain, I suggest, mythical forms – holograms – ethereal visions and specters hovering over the ruins of the desolate earth.
Andromache, let’s say, standing on the walls just before receiving the child, tearfully smiling. Andromache in the palace, weeping. Andromache holding the dead Astyanax. Andromache after the spear-wielding trophy; a Minor Asian mistress, both servant and lady in the palace of Phthia.
Andromache, always proud, a three-dimensional image that floats through the universe, calling to Hector: “Oh dearest Hector, oh my great love.”
